Tuesday, November 24, 2015, 3:45 PM - Manmeet Bhullar, a Calgary Progressive Conservative member of the legislative assembly (MLA), was killed Monday when he got out of his car to help a stranded motorist amid snowy conditions.

Bhullar, 35, and another driver pulled over to help a vehicle that skidded off the Queen Elizabeth II Highway north of Red Deer.

Moments later a semi-truck lost control and struck one of the parked vehicles, hitting Bhullar while he was walking towards the rollover.

He was rushed to hospital where he later died. There were no other injuries in the incident.

Heavy snow has caused several problems on provincial highways. Dicey conditions will continue through Tuesday, with up to 25 cm of snow possible across parts of the province.

"The light in our lives went dark today," his family said in a statement Monday evening.

"Manmeet Singh left us while he was doing what he loved more than anything — helping someone else."

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi called Bhullar "a public servant, a true warrior for fairness and justice, a big man with a giant heart, a friend."

Bhullar, who was born in Calgary, was elected to the Alberta Legislature while he was studying law in March 2008, at the age of twenty-seven.
