Tuesday, February 9, 2016, 5:16 PM - An Alberta man is asking the government to help pay for car repairs after strong winds caused roadside gravel to pelt his new SUV, chipping the paint on the exterior.

Kosta Keramaris told CTV he was driving his BMW along Edmonton's provincial Highway 216 on the weekend when a windstorm stirred up sand and rock debris.

He told CTV the sound of the gravel hitting his car was "loud."

"It basically drowned out my son's voice and our talking," he says, adding the rocks caused paint to chip on the car's body and on the rims.

He believes the gravel shouldn't have been on the road in the first place and is asking the government to help cover the $17,000 repair bill he was quoted.

"We haven't had any snow. Whatever snow was on the ground has been melted away. Whatever you can see on the roads now is just basically mountains of rock," he told CTV.

"It's their (the province's) responsibility to clean it."

The Transportation Department has asked Keramaris to file a claim for the province to review.

Even if the government does help with the repairs, Keramaris may not be able to get behind the wheel of his BMW anytime soon.

According to CTV, spring clean-up only happens when Alberta crews are sure the last snow has fallen, typically around March or April.
