Ball of green light spotted over Montreal Thursday

Friday, October 3, 2014, 5:36 PM - Experts have concluded that a green ball of light spotted in the sky above Montreal Thursday night was not a meteor, sparking rampant speculation about the origin of the strange orb.
According to the CBC, witnesses in several areas -- including Quebec, Ontario, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Wyoming and Ohio -- reported seeing the light.
The incident was caught on video by Montreal news agency TVA as weather specialist Colette Provencher filmed a broadcast at 10:38 p.m.
In the clip the light can be seen on the left side of the screen, where it falls and burns out quickly.
Pierre Hudon, a meteor expert at McGill University, told the CBC that meteors light up the sky when they pass through an area and that isn't what happened Thursday night -- leading him to conclude it wasn't a meteor.

But Sebastien Giguere, scientific and education coordinator for the Mont-Mégantic Observatory AstroLab, argues otherwise.
Giguere told TVA News that the light resembled a shooting star or a small meteor, adding that its greenish tint was due to the presence of magnesium.
According to Giguere, shooting stars are small stones from space that burn up when they come into contact with the Earth's atmosphere.
