Thursday, June 4, 2015, 2:57 PM - Canada's first tornado of the year has been confirmed by Environment Canada.
The agency has verified that an EF-1 touched down in southern Ontario just northeast of the city of London, Ont., on Saturday, May 30 around 2:30 p.m. local time.
A cold front swept through the region on Saturday making for a weekend of unsettled weather and spawning thunderstorms, torrential downpours and strong winds.
Storms were especially severe over the London area.

The damage inflicted by destructive winds gusting up to 175 km/hr garnered an EF-1 rating for the tornado, based on an investigation by Environment Canada and engineers from the University of Western Ontario.
The Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale ranges from 0 to 5, with rankings based on wind speeds and the amount of damage observed on the ground once the storm has passed.
Reports of wind damage were widespread during and after the weekend storms in the greater London area. Trees and buildings sustained damage from Bryanston to St. Mary's, while a barn was damaged halfway between the communities of Thorndale and Bryanston.
Environment Canada issued multiple thunderstorm watches and warnings throughout the day on Saturday across parts of southern Ontario. However, no tornado watches or warnings were issued that day.
On average, Canada sees about 60 verified tornadoes each year, and typically about 12-13 of those touch down in the province of Ontario.
