Fashion that fits: Company hopes to create 3D printed sweaters

When it comes to fashion, one size definitely doesn't fit all -- and clothing company Appalatch is hoping to address that with the world's first 3D printed sweater.
"Once upon a time, custom-fitted garments were the only option!" The company writes on its Kickstarter page.
"People visited a local tailor, got measured, picked out the fabric - a few weeks later they picked up their clothes, totally customized to their body and preferences."
New technology will allow Appalatch to respond to the mass-marketed goods that dominate today's marketplace.
"Fast" fashion -- described as ill-fitting, poor quality clothing -- is often made in poor conditions and with little regard for the environment.
Appalatch founders Mariano deGuzman and Grace Gouin say they want to make consumers more aware of what they buy while drawing attention to product quality, rather than quantity.
The company has started a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of acquiring a specialized knitting machine that works like a 3D printer, allowing for the swift production of custom-made goods.
If the printer is purchased, customers will be able to send Appalatch their measurements which will be used to create a one-of-a-kind sweater.
As an added bonus: Gouin and deGuzman say the knitting machine creates virtually zero waste, saving up to 30% of the fabric that's discarded using traditional sewing techniques.
