Wednesday, June 8, 2016, 10:04 AM - June 8th is World Oceans Day; celebrate with a generous dose of Vitamin SEA.

World Oceans Day is an annual United Nations-recognized day to celebrate our planet’s oceans and take action against the forces that threaten their health. The theme of World Oceans Day 2016 is "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet" and is focused on attempting to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.

"World Oceans Day has grown tremendously each year since The Ocean Project started coordinating it in 2002," the website says. "With hundreds of partners involved, and the United Nations officially recognizing June 8 as World Oceans Day in 2008, we have reached millions worldwide."

Plastic pollution threatens marine life, clogs coastlines with unsightly garbage and could have a disastrous long-term impact on human health as contaminated fish wind up on our plates. One of the easiest ways to reduce the amount of plastic headed into our waterways is to commit to carrying reusable bags. You can also choose to drink filtered tap water rather than reaching for a disposable plastic bottle. Check out other ideas on the World Oceans Day website.
