How 360 video is used to report on Fort McMurray

Monday, May 9, 2016, 1:42 PM - Advanced new technology is allowing media to cover events from new angles, including 360 degrees. It is these advancements in storytelling that allow the audience to be front and centre as part of action while it unfolds.

The Weather Network has been on the ground in fire-ravaged Fort McMurray, Alta., to cover the devastating wildfires, and Storm Hunter Mark Robinson has spent the weekend using a new 360 camera to provide all angles of the fire. It is an interactive way for audiences to experience the high volumes of smoke and fire still burning. The technology was also used by the crew to captured a 360-degree view of a twister on the ground on Tornado Alley.

The new type of Google streaming service now lets you view videos in any direction. Simply hover your mouse over the video, tap, and drag to look around. You can control the viewing angles and decide what action you want to look at.

A virtual reality experience is an option as well. You can view the video using virtual reality goggles, such as Google Cardboard, for a totally immersive experience.

**360 degree interactive videos only work in Chrome browsers or the Youtube app on your iPhone or Android device**
