Wednesday, April 1, 2015, 5:21 PM - The Indian Army has pledged to climb Mt. Everest to remove thousands of pounds of trash from area.

The mountain has been littered with debris for years, turning a once-pristine landscape into a mass of rotting trash.

The climbing team will consist of 34 members who plan to collect more than 8,800 lbs. of non-biodegradable garbage and equipment that's been discarded by climbers.

“Sadly, Mount Everest is now also called the world’s highest junkyard,” Major Ranveer Singh Jamval, the leader of the climb said, according to Time.

The team is scheduled to leave for Kathmandu Saturday and will begin climbing the mountain in mid-May.

“This is a very ambitious mission. The team will be split into two groups. One group will attempt to climb Mount Everest while the second will set out to scale Mount Lahotse, the fourth highest peak in the world. The team members will also participate in the extreme high-altitude marathon in the Himalayas,” an unidentified source for the Directorate General of Military Training told the Daily Mail.

The clean-up effort comes on the 50th anniversary of the first successful Everest climb led by then Lieutenant Commander M.S. Kohli.
