Meteoroid explosion caught on camera

Thursday, July 30, 2015, 6:58 PM - A stunning video has emerged on YouTube that, when slowed down, gives a great view of a meteoroid burning up in the sky.

The footage was shot on July 21, 2015 at Shark Fin Cove near Santa Cruz, California, according to the video's YouTube description.

The video was uploaded by Marc Donahue, who was shooting a time lapse of the area when he noticed a streak across the sky that was comprised of burning particles.

"I did the calculations and the dust fell from the sky for at least 50 frames of my time lapse," Donahue says.

"Each exposure was 15 seconds long, so that means the burning dust fell for 12.5 minutes."

WHAT IS A METEOROID?

A meteoroid is a small piece of space debris that travels through space and burns up as it moves through the Earth's atmosphere. If part of a meteoroid makes its way to Earth, it is called a meteorite.
