Mom leaves kids in car when at court for leaving kids in car

Thursday, June 11, 2015, 4:51 AM - A Virginia woman has been charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency or abuse of child after she left two children inside her hot car outside a courthouse Monday. She was at the courthouse to turn herself in for previously leaving her children in a hot car, the Associated Press reports.

Laquanda Newby, 25, was first accused of leaving her children in a hot car on May 26 while she went shopping.

By the time police had arrived, Newby had returned to her car and authorities could not arrest her because they had not witnessed the crime.

She made arrangements with the police to later turn herself in so she could be booked.

It's unclear how long the children were in the car but surveillance footage suggests it was more than an hour.

On Monday, daytime highs were in the 30C range when Newby attended court and left her children unattended in a hot car once more.

Newby was booked in the Henrico jail and her bond was denied.

The children have been placed in the custody of their father.

Since 1990, more than 600 children have died in the U.S. from being left in hot cars, according to WebMD.

Experts say there is no safe amount of time to leave a child or animal unattended in a hot car.

Even on a day where daytime highs are around 20C, the inside temperature of a car can quickly climb to 48 degrees Celsius, causing heatstroke and death.
