Once in a lifetime shot: A tornado and a rainbow

Thursday, August 13, 2015, 6:28 PM - On a cloudy day in May, amateur meteorologist Jason Blum captured a once-in-a-lifetime shot, featuring two very different atmospheric phenomena in the same frame.
Blum was on a storm chase near Eads, Colorado with his 14-year-old son when they found themselves less than a kilometre away from a tornado and a rainbow .
"What I love about storms is their power," Blum says in a press release.
"The first time I ever chased, a tornado formed right in front of us. In less than a minute, a relatively small supercell grew into this monster funnel, and the wind intensified until it was so loud we could barely hear ourselves shouting. And there it was, the Holy Grail of storm-chasers – a tornado – I was instantly hooked."
While the photograph is incredible, meteorologists don't generally recommend getting too close to a tornado.
"Some storms are much safer to chase than others, provided you have an understanding of their structure and behaviour," Blum said, according to the UK Express.
"They can definitely be unpredictable though, so it's important to never underestimate them."
