Friday, January 9, 2015, 2:38 PM - A Canadian truck driver is dead and an unknown number are injured following a pileup involving 150 vehicles in western Michigan. The accident was triggered by bands of snow in the area, and included a fireworks truck that ignited and created quite a scene.

The deadly crash on Interstate 94 east of Kalamazoo, MI began around 10 a.m. Friday and was reportedly caused by heavy snow at the time, triggering icy road conditions, said officials.

The Canadian truck is reportedly from Ottawa, Ont.
The exact cause of the crash is not known, but at least 150 vehicles were ultimately involved, including several semi-trucks carrying hazardous materials. One truck involved in the pileup was carrying 40,000 pounds of fireworks, which exploded when the truck caught fire.
Residents within a three-mile radius of the crash scene were evacuated due to the presence of hazardous chemicals, but were allowed to return home later in the day.
The I-94 is shut down in both directions between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek while recovery and cleanup efforts continue.
