One small house for man, one giant shack for mankind

Saturday, May 31, 2014, 5:20 PM -

A Swedish-style shack could be the latest "giant leap for mankind." Thanks to Mikael Genberg, the rather monotonous moonscape may be about to receive a minor facelift. Genberg hopes to work with the Swedish Space Corporation and private donations to bring his Moonhouse idea to reality: to place a small red house with white corners on the Moon.

The Västerås-native artist has usually focused on alternative ways of accommodation, often inspired by the red Swedish house with white corners. The idea to take his art to space came in 1999, when he heard that the Swedish Space Corporation were building a moonlander.

The project's website is set up in a similar way to a Kickstarter page, where different donation amounts come attached to different rewards. The donations range from $1 to $100 000. In fact, being one of the four people that donate that vast amount of money allows you to take part of a zero gravity flight. According to the website, that's as close as space travel as you will get. With 183 days left for funding, the project has only been able to gather $3751 out of $15,360,000.00 needed to fully fund The Moonhouse.

If the project is not able to put together the funds in the allocated time, the money will be returned to the owners minus the administrative costs.
