Tuesday, February 17, 2015, 9:46 AM - Not a bad Valentine's Day present for one seal separated from its loved ones.

Inverness District RCMP in Nova Scotia were called in to investigate reports of a seal near Highway 19 in Newtown, N.S. at around 10 a.m. on February 14.

They found the seal, snapped it up with a seal net, and drove it back down to the water in Port Hawkesbury, where it was released into the Strait of Canso.

"The baby seal showed his appreciation for the Mounties' efforts by posing for a photo while in the back of the truck," a release on the RCMP's website reads.

We're sure it appreciated the help, but the RCMP would have their hands full 24 hours later, when this weekend's massive nor'easter slammed the Maritimes and Newfoundland, dumping up to 80 cm on PEI and lesser, but still staggering amounts, elsewhere in the Maritimes.

The Canso Causeway near where the police released the seal was still closed to high sided vehicles Tuesday morning, and highways north of Truro connecting the province to New Brunswick were actually still closed by the morning, and closures and shutdowns are still widespread.

And forecasters are eyeing another system that may impact the region Thursday. Check back for more details.
