Friday, January 29, 2016, 11:44 AM - Two teens were let off with a slap on the wrist after taking a ride down Peterborough's Otonabee River on an ice floe Thursday afternoon.

At least seven firefighters, police and paramedics responded to the call from a concerned bystander about the drifting pair.

Police say it appears it was an intentional act and according to reports, the duo posed for pictures and openly mocked onlookers who were trying to help.

Fire crews noticed the two were moving quickly downstream and were unknowingly headed towards a hydro dam and rapid currents.

Emergency crews used an inflatable boat and two members from the fire department were equipped with immersion suits to reach the stranded teens. The rescue took about 12 minutes from the time crews arrived on scene, according to Peterborough This Week.

A video of the event was posted to YouTube Thursday and has since gained over 3,000 views.

The teens who are not from the Peterborough area, were not charged but were given a stern warning.

Due to the fact weather often changes and water and ice remains unpredictable, Platoon Chief Rolf Erdmann of Peterborough Fire Services urges people to use caution near water this winter.

"Stay safe, stay off the ice, stay away from the moving water," Erdmann told Peterborough This Week.
