Sinkhole swallows cars in Melbourne, Australia

Tuesday, December 16, 2014, 8:32 AM - Cars tumbled into a sinkhole that opened up in the inner city of the Australian metropolis of Melbourne.

Vine user Mark Doman captured the moment one of the luckless vehicles nestled even further into the chasm, above. Three cars suffered that fate.

The Age newspaper reports the flooding that caused the road to open up came a burst watermain, which threatened to inundate some 50 homes in the area.

The flooding was so bad, one resident said her cat was "swimming in the backyard," while another feared it was a tsunami.

In the end, The Age says three homes were damaged by ankle-deep water. Crews were on site as of Monday, and the cause of the break is being investigated.

It's the second sinkhole accident in a month for Melbourne. In late November, a mother-of-six tumbled into a three-metre-deep sinkhole while hanging laundry.

She was forced to tread water for 20 minutes before a neighbour was alerted to her cries for help. Rescuers hauled her out with ropes.
