Tuesday, May 31, 2016, 6:27 PM - A trough that has lingered over the Prairies over the past couple of days continues to bring scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain.

"Southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba will continue to see soggy conditions into Wednesday with rainfall warnings in place for regions like Estevan," says Weather Network meteorologist Brett Soderholm. "Close to 70 mm of rain is possible once all is said and done."

While the heaviest rain tapers Tuesday evening, localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, warns Environment Canada in the rainfall warning.

Funnel cloud spotted in Monday's storms

A funnel cloud was spotted just south of Aylesbury, Saskatchewan shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday. Environment Canada had issued a weather advisory at the time warning of favourable conditions and the possibility of funnel clouds developing near Regina and Moose Jaw. A funnel cloud is defined as a a rotating funnel-shaped cloud that, if it makes contact with the ground or water, forms the core of a tornado or a water spout.

No tornadoes were reported and the warning was later dropped for the region.

In Oyen, Alberta, reports on social media showed heavy downpours and flash flooding from Monday's storms.

High pressure will build into the Prairies for the rest of the week with a period of warmer and drier weather expected into early next week. That pattern however, won't last long as a trough develops in the west bringing more active weather later next week.
