Friday, June 10, 2016, 5:13 PM - A 25-year-old man from Toronto, Ont. is dead after falling 30 metres into a Hamilton, Ont. waterfall referred to as the 'Devil's Punchbowl' Wednesday evening.
Responders were called to the scene around 9 p.m.
The conscious man was found at the base of the gully, approximately 60 metres below the falls.
Hamilton Police Staff Sgt. Greg Jackson told reporters he was trying to take pictures when he fell. He was with a group of friends who climbed over a road barrier.
Gord Costae of the Hamilton Conservation Authority told CHCH News there are warning signs in place in addition to the barriers but that doesn't stop everyone from venturing past safety bounds.
Due to the extent of his injuries, rescue crews abandoned a traditional rope rescue, which can take an hour to set up, in favour of walking him out on a stretcher.
He was loaded onto an ambulance by 10:30 p.m. and died in the hospital Thursday morning.
His death has been ruled accidental.
