Sunday, August 30, 2015, 9:45 AM - A massive supermoon put on a stellar display in the skies over Canada Saturday night -- and some of our viewers managed to capture the lunar event in all of its glory.
Also known as a perigee full moon, the lunar spectacle occurs when a full moon’s orbit is at its closest point to Earth, according to a report by NASA.
It is the first of three consecutive “supermoons” occurring this year. Three have already occurred in January, February and March, and two more will rise in September and October.
August's full moon is often referred to as the 'Sturgeon Moon,' after Native American fishing tribes found the large fish to be most abundant in the Great Lakes and other large bodies of freshwater during the month.
The best photos of the August supermoon submitted by our viewers are featured in the slideshow above.
Be sure to keep your eyes and lenses on the sky in September, when the full moon will undergo a total lunar eclipse.
