The earthquake hit 39 kilometres west of Chicoutimi-Jonquiere, Que. While there were no reports of damage or injuries, the tremor was lightly felt by nearby communities with several reports trickling in shortly after it occurred.

"Earthquakes are not uncommon to this region of Quebec. However, stronger earthquakes are uncommon. Since 1985, approximately 207 earthquakes have occurred within 100 km of this one, with only 16 of them being magnitude 3 or greater," says Matt Grinter, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

The earthquake has not yet been rated or registered by the The United States Geological Survey (USGS).
