Early morning thunderstorms fire up over southern Manitoba, warnings issued
Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were issued early Friday morning, as Thursday's storm threat across the southern Prairies persisted through the overnight hours, approaching southern Manitoba through pre-dawn on Friday.
As the line of nocturnal storms pushes through in the early morning hours, it will bring frequent lightning and heavy downpours, as well as the threat for some damaging winds, with gusts in excess of 90 km/h and possibly large hail.
"Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury," says Environment Canada in the thunderstorm watch issued for Winnipeg. "Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads."
The thunderstorm threat will diminish in strength through the morning hours, as they push across the border into northwestern Ontario, but thunder will remain possible, along with heavy downpours and potentially some small hail.
