Moderate earthquake jolts Montrealers awake Monday morning
A moderate earthquake rumbled some Montrealers awake early Monday morning, with shaking felt in and around the city.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 3.3 earthquake hit near Joliette, about an hour northeast of the city of Montreal. It was also felt in Laval, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The quake struck at 7:03 a.m.
Earthquakes Canada rated the quake as a magnitude 3.8, but the rating will likely continue to be refined as additional data becomes available.
"This morning at around 7 a.m., I heard a loud noise, like a train next to my house - which I don't actually have, but loud enough to wake me up," said Anne-Sophie Colombani, a meteorologist at The Weather Network who lives in Montreal. "And a few seconds later, we heard a cracking noise all through the house because of the shaking."
Its shallow depth of just five kilometres is likely why it was strong enough to wake people in the area. No damage has been reported.
Several residents were also quick to report the shaking on Twitter, trying to confirm that it was indeed an earthquake they felt.
