Staggeringly strong high pressure flaunts record values
The phenomenon meant sunny skies for the north, but it had effects in southern Canada as well.
The barometers in northern Canada got quite the workout this week.
Over the past few days, the computer models projected extraordinarily high barometric pressure in Nunavut; some projections were highlighting the possibility of hitting the elusive 1070 hPa mark.
Well, the numbers are in.
Unofficially, there are several locations in northern Canada that not only broke their all-time April pressure record but their all-time pressure records as well.
According to meteorologist David Roth on Twitter, the high pressure shattered April records by up to 16-18 hPa – verifying this event is over four standard deviations outside of climatology for early April.
The highest barometric measurement recorded during this saga?
1068.2 hPa at Fort Ross, Nunavut.

Keep in mind, a normal sea level pressure reading is roughly 1013 hPa. But, it's only a 5 per cent increase from the average, showing just how constant atmospheric pressure is around the globe.

The recent blocking in the atmosphere, paired with the record-breaking high has been an excellent conduit to funnel down extremely chilly air across British Columbia and the Prairies.
