The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of AirQuality has issued an Air Quality Alert for ozone until 11 PM EDTthis evening.Ozone levels are expected to rise into the Unhealthy for SensitiveGroups range today. In addition, particle pollution levels areexpected to be moderate statewide. It is important to remember thateven in areas with moderate levels of ozone and particle pollutionthe health impacts will be compounded by the effects of heat andhumidity.The Maine Department of Environmental Protection recommends thatindividuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity toreduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may beespecially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutantsinclude the very young, the elderly, those with pre-existingrespiratory problems such as asthma, those with heart disease andanyone who is working hard outdoors. But if you experience symptomssuch as shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation or anuncomfortable sensation in your chest please consider limiting theintensity and duration of your outdoor activities.A toll free air quality hotline has been established so Maineresidents can stay informed on the air quality situations.
