Recommended Action

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out ofthe sun, and check up on relatives, neighbors, workers, and theelderly.Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loosefitting clothing. Try to limit exercise and strenuous activities toearly morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heatexhaustion and heat stroke. Heat related illnesses increasesignificantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Death ispossible to unprepared people and pets.To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety andHealth Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks inshaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heatshould be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is anemergency! Call 9 1 1.

* WHAT...Heat index values up to 113.* WHERE...Zapata, Jim Hogg, Starr, Brooks, Hidalgo, Cameron,Willacy, and Kenedy County except the barrier islands.* WHEN...Until 8 PM CDT this evening.* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly duringextreme heat and high humidity events.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Heat index values have reached 111 to 115along and east of IH-69C and US 281 from Brooks and Hidalgo Countyto the west side of Laguna Madre. Values across the Brush Country,Rio Grande Plains, and upper Valley ranged from 105 to 109 at 3 pmand may not rise much more...but arrival of easterly winds between4 and 5 PM may provide enough moisture to push values to 111 fortwo hours in these areas.
