The idea of "self-care" has blossomed into something very valuable. However, how many of us are putting a solid plan in place when it comes to feeling our best and putting ourselves first?

Start 2021 with a plan to revitalize yourself. From hair to skin, a home spa and healthier snacking. We’ve done the homework. Rexall Cosmetician, Amy Shields, provides some pro tips as we explore multiple ways you can up your self-care game.

Create a home spa

Home spa? Yes please. Have a dedicated space in your home that is fit for relaxation. Essential oils like lavender and eucalyptus may help you unwind in this space.

Amy’s Pro Tip: “My favourite thing to have is my therapy light. As someone who suffers from depression, especially during the cold months my therapy light is by far the biggest asset to keeping myself and my mental health in tune. A white noise sound machine is also very beneficial when you're trying to unwind while you pamper yourself with a nice face mask, a good book and some hot chocolate. Having a dedicated home spa is very beneficial! It's your space to relax and do whatever you need to melt your stresses away.

Set a day of the week to pamper yourself. Think "self-care Sunday"! A footbath with a massager and a plush comfy robe will allow you to dive right into that me time.

Soothe your skin

Find a highly moisturizing cream to help combat winter weather drying out your skin. And on top of winter challenges we also have our masks wearing down your face. Unfortunately, “mascne” was invented in 2020.

Amy’s Pro Tip: “To help combat mascne, use a good cleanser to wash your face and a mattifying pore minimizing cream which will also help keep your skin from breaking out. Keeping positive while having breakouts is another thing I recommend to everyone. Beating yourself up because your skin isn't cooperating won't do you any good. Things will take time. You can't expect your new cream or cleanser to work immediately. Give any skin care at least a month before you give up on the product. Acne wash and creams can make your skin worse before it gets better. That's because the product is working! It's getting all that sebum and dead skin out of your pores!”

Hydrate your hair

The winter months can really decrease the quality of our hair. Making it brittle and easy to break. It can be frustrating seeing more split ends, hair breakage and the loss of our usually silky texture.

Amy’s Pro Tip: “When my hair starts to dry out and break, I immediately start using a good hair oil and doing hair masks once a week. Giving your hair extra oils and moisture is key to keeping your hair happy and healthy! When using a hair oil, do not put it directly on the roots as it will make your hair look greasy, only apply on the length and ends of your hair. Over-washing can also be a factor for dry hair and breakage. Our hair needs natural oils in it. Go the extra day or two and don't be afraid of dry shampoo. Your hair will thank you for not washing it all the time.”

Some hair oils to consider are: argan oil, coconut oil, olive oil or Jamaican black castor oil.

Put your self-care plan in motion by creating a healthy routine. Add in things that you simply enjoy and can look forward to. Amy also mentioned, “personally, I can't have a good self care routine going if I don't feel like my mental health is good.”

That internal aspect of health is equally as important!

And don't forget, the team at Rexall is here to help you introduce healthier habits into your routine, simplify your care, and improve your well-being this year.
