Ensure your pup's paws are protected in extreme heat
Parts of Canada are really starting to heat up. For those of us who have dogs, it's important to remember to protect their sweet shoeless paws.
Because dogs are so awesome, they rarely complain about uncomfortable conditions. That's why we need to ensure we're aware of possible environmental risks. During the summer, pavement and other walking surfaces can really heat up.
Mark Robinson, a meteorologist at The Weather Network, reached out to Katie Kocmarek of Montoassauraus dog training centre, to get a better understanding of how we can protect our dogs.
Kocmarek says that the best way to check the temperature of a potential walking surface is by giving it a "five-second test." Put your hand flat on the surface for five to 10 seconds, and if you're able to sustain the temperature, your dog can safely do so as well.
If a surface is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws, and your pup could sustain burns. Kocmarek recommends taking your dog for a stroll on a grassy area or in the shaded space. She also reminds us to brings lots of water for those longer walks and provides additional cooling and safety tips in the video above.
