Park officials in Harkers Island, North Carolina, were baffled Thursday, May 2 when they found a beaver blowing bubbles in the water.

“Can someone who is familiar with beavers (they are not common in salt water) explain why it is blowing bubbles in the water?” Cape Lookout officials asked on Facebook.

Jodie Owen, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, told the Charlotte Observer the beaver is likely either sick or disorientated, possibly by a storm that washed it from the mainland to the sea.

Owen said the beaver may have been blowing bubbles “to get the taste of salt out of its mouth" -- although it's hard to say for sure without examining the animal.
