Million-dollar scent: These flowers cost more than a house

Consider yourself very lucky if you receive any of these flowers on Mother's Day!

While there aren't many, there are flowers that cost more than some homes. Yup, you read that right.

You can buy Juliet roses for far less than $5 million (a quick Google search will turn up blooms in the $50 range), but the flower is known as the “£3 million rose” because that’s how much it cost renowned rose breeder David Austin to develop the hybrid over a fifteen-year period. The rose made its debut at the Chelsea flower show in 2006, earning the name for the most expensive rose ever cultivated.

This Sri Lankan flower is so rare it's considered priceless. It blooms once a year, if that.

The Kadupal flower only blooms at night at will most likely die if touched. By the time the sun rises, it will have withered away.

The flower is so delicate and its lifespan so short, experts say it would be impossible to purchase.

HONOURABLE MENTION: CROCUS SAFFRON - $5,000 - $10,000/POUND

This is the flower that produces saffron — one of the world's costliest spices. It takes a football field's worth of crocuses — that's about 70,000 flowers — to produce a pound of saffron. The labour-intensive production process is the reason the flower is so pricey.
