PHOTOS: Iceberg season in Newfoundland has begun

Onlookers are captivated by the towering icebergs

The early appearance of an iceberg that was visible from St. John’s iconic Signal Hill has kicked off the year’s iceberg season.

Local residents are excited about the future icebergs that will float by as many tourists travel to the region in hopes of catching a glimpse of this unique environmental phenomenon.

Approximately 90 per cent of an iceberg's mass is hidden underneath the water and the interior temperature of an iceberg that reaches Newfoundland can be between -15°C to -20°C.

Most of the icebergs that travel past the eastern coast of Newfoundland have broken off from 10,000-year-old glaciers in Iceberg Alley near Greenland. See below for a look at some of the glaciers that have floated past Newfoundland in 2019:
