Want to eat like a bear? Here are some tips for catching trout

Looking to snag some trout this season? These tips will help reel in the big catch.

Soaring food costs have many Canadians feeling the pinch, but you know who's not paying attention to food prices? Bears.

These furry foragers have the luxury of catching fish for free without worrying about the cost of food or how much to tip the server. With a few helpful tips, you too, can catch your own delicious trout for dinner and eat just as well as the bears.

First, it's important to invest in a good pair of rubber boots for any fishing trip. Taylor Shelley, a seasoned trout fisher from Nova Scotia, recommends fishing on cloudy days, as the top of the water is warmer when it's sunny, forcing fish to go deeper.

The best spots to fish are anywhere with a current, as these create deeper holes where most fish will be.

When it comes to bait, Shelley recommends using flies, but worms will also do the trick. If using flies there is an additional tip that can help.

"Depending on the weather, (trout) like bright colours such as neons, greens, the pinks. And then on some other days, they want black or a really dark brown," says Shelley.

Finally, when it's time to catch your trout for dinner, the magic number is "13.8 inches," according to Shelley. Some people prefer to keep them a little bigger to keep the population growing, but Shelley personally prefers to release them back into the water.

By following these simple tips, you'll be able to catch your own trout for dinner and enjoy a delicious meal without breaking the bank. And while you may not be able to eat for free like the bears, you'll be able to enjoy the satisfaction of catching your own meal.

It's important to note that environmental factors can impact fish populations. Always follow local fishing regulations and fish responsibly.
