B.C.’s weekend warmth spreads toward the Prairies next week

A dry and warm pattern will dominate into the middle of the month across the western half of the country

The ridge that’s turning up the heat over British Columbia this weekend will move east and raise temperatures on the Prairies heading into next week.

We’re firmly in the 2024 wildfire season and this ridge is a reminder that the rain we’ve had of late is unusual for this time of year. This spell of warm and dry will likely increase the fire danger rating throughout the region.

Folks around Metro Vancouver could see readings close to 30°C during the day on Saturday, with temperatures possibly exceeding the 30-degree mark inland—too far inland for the ocean breeze to stave off the warmth.

The heat will peak in Alberta through Tuesday and Wednesday with daytime highs climbing into the mid- to upper-20s. A stray 30-degree reading isn’t out of the question for some spots. Temperatures will begin to fall off in Alberta later in the week as the focus of the ridge moves east.

Rising temperatures are especially bad news in Calgary as parts of the city have been placed under a water advisory after a major water main break on Wednesday evening. The city has also enacted an outdoor water use ban, meaning residents won't be able to give their parched lawns and plants a drink as the temperatures rise and the dry weather sets in.

Increased wildfire risk

The recent rainy pattern has helped to reduce the wildfire risk across northern portions of the Prairies and throughout B.C.

BC wildfire status as of June 6 2024

As of Thursday, June 6, however, the fire danger rating remains between high and extreme across southern portions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

As the dry pattern and high temperatures persist, the fire danger rating is likely to increase throughout Western Canada.
