High pressure in Europe will create backwards weather in Canada's East Coast
Like a tango over the Atlantic Ocean, these two dancing pressure systems make for backwards weather on the East Coast.
When one part of the world is getting pleasant weather, usually another location is getting the opposite. This is because the Earth is always trying to maintain balance. The warm air from the equator is headed to the poles and the cold air from the north is fighting to merge south. This, my friend, is the jet stream at work.
THE OMEGA HIGH
An omega high is a technical term that is thrown around in the weather world every season, but it means so much more than just the Greek symbol attached to a high-pressure system. It means lousy weather can get stalled, and even move backwards, against the prevailing winds that usually keep the roller-coaster of weather moving.
There is a omega high parked over western Europe currently and this means fantastic weather for folks overseas, including an abundance of sunshine. To the west, closer to Canada, sits a deep upper-level low-pressure system that simply won't budge. Possibly for days.
DIVIDED WEATHER ON CANADIAN EAST COAST
The term used is a retrogading low over Newfoundland. While conditions will be cooler and unsettled for the coastal areas of the island, it's not all bad news for people in the Maritimes. They will be experiencing very pleasant conditions this week while under the influence of a ridge of high pressure that is over the Great lakes and Quebec.
Lots of sunshine is expected for the short range, and warm temperatures even as high as the mid-20s is forecast for New Brunswick. By contrast, for the next several days, most of Newfoundland will be underneath cloud cover, rain and a raw northwest wind circulating around the upper-level low.
Temperatures will be lucky to hit high single digits.
WHEN WILL THIS BREAK DOWN?
The pattern does break down in the long range and we will see a more typical jet stream pattern evolve. By the weekend we will see temperatures that are closer to seasonal for Eastern Canada, with some days featuring active weather and some days featuring fair conditions. However, whatever weather we get will move in the right direction this time.
