Stormy start to the weekend in Ontario, but expect a strong finish

It wouldn’t feel like a weekend this year without the threat for showers and thunderstorms. However, this weekend we will get the rain over with early and ultimately more of the weekend will be sunny than soggy.

The weather will look promising heading into the weekend as we will start Friday with sunshine and warm temperatures. Most of southern Ontario will be on the warm side of seasonal, but an easterly breeze off Lake Ontario will keep temperatures a few degrees cooler across parts of the Greater Toronto Area.

However, we will see increasing clouds during the afternoon and scattered showers and thunderstorms will spread from west to east across our region during the late afternoon and evening with localized downpours.

The timing for the rain and storms could still change by a few hours, but at this point it doesn’t look like an ideal evening for campfires or for dinner and drinks on the patio.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue into early Friday night, but most of southern Ontario (except for eastern areas) should be dry after midnight. Temperatures will remain quite mild with humid conditions.

Saturday will bring a mix of sun and cloudy periods with scattered thunderstorms and the potential for localized downpours. However, most of the day will be dry and many places will get through the day without seeing more rain.

The threat for showers will be higher across cottage country, but this region will also see some sunny periods and most of the day will be dry.

The risk for passing showers will continue into early Saturday evening, especially across cottage country. Otherwise, Saturday night will be partly cloudy with seasonal temperatures.

The weekend will finish strong. Sunday will be a pleasant summer day with abundant sunshine and seasonal temperatures. A stray shower is possible during the afternoon, but most places will stay dry.

At this point it looks like next weekend will bring a warming trend, followed by a stretch of more consistent warm/hot weather during mid July.

Will next weekend also bring the all too familiar threat for showers and thunderstorms? It is too early to make that call, but I can’t blame you if you are already assuming that it will. But we are more than due for a dry weekend!
