Epic rains wash out highways, trigger emergencies on the East Coast
An epic rainstorm, which dropped more than 100 mm of rain on parts of the Atlantic provinces, has left behind a serious mess to clear.
Eastern Nova Scotia was particularly hard-hit, especially Cape Breton, where a reading of 234 mm was recorded at Ingonish Beach, and 101 mm at Port Hawkesbury. Several road washouts have been reported.
A state of emergency was declared Tuesday in Victoria County, and though it was lifted Wednesday, provincial officials say it could be 'days or weeks' before all flood damage is repaired.
Across the Gulf, heavy rains also impacted Newfoundland, once again with highway washouts, including at four points along the Trans-Canada Highway. Provincial officials said Thursday they could not yet estimate how much time it would take to conduct repairs.
