Record heat spills into the Southern Hemisphere, temperatures soar over 50C
While frigid winter temperatures are the current focus for most Canadians, other parts of the world continue to sizzle as it appears 2021's streak of record breaking heat continues into 2022.
In the wake of Canada's unprecedented summer and one of the warmest Septembers ever recorded worldwide, record smashing heat has now shifted to the Southern Hemisphere to start this new year.

Authorities in Australia warned people to stay indoors on Friday, as a severe and dangerous heatwave pushed temperatures to a blistering 50.7°C - a daytime high last seen 62 years ago. That also tied the highest ever temperature measured in the Southern Hemisphere.
While Australians are used to the summer heat, it's typically only the occasional day over 40°C to endure. The temperature peaked above 50°C in Onslow on Friday, a small western Australian town around 100 km from Exmouth.

In Argentina, 700,000 customers were left without power this week as mid-afternoon highs soared above 40°C.
These temperatures that were recorded have not been seen in 115 years, and were delivered right to the 15 million person population centre of Buenos Aires.
