It sounds like a scene out of a Hollywood movie, but this is real life: Morgan Freeman has saved the day by safely landing a malfunctioning airplane -- several times.

He may be best known for his soothing voice and superior acting skills, but Morgan Freeman is also a skilled pilot.

Earlier this month, the 77 year-old was flying a jet from his home in Mississippi to attend the premiere of his film Ruth & Alex at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Somewhere along the way, it became clear there was something wrong with the aircraft.

"The slats would not retract in the air. On the ground they were fine, but in the air they were a problem. We were about 10 minutes in the air trying to get them to retract, but they didn't so we went back and landed," he told reporters at TIFF.

After the problem was fixed Freeman took off again, only to find the problem persisted.

There were four failed attempts to get the plane back in the air. Eventually, the faulty plane was left on the tarmac and Freeman took another plane to Toronto, where he arrived about 90 minutes behind schedule.

The Hollywood actor maintains he was "never in any danger".

Freeman owns two private jets and has had his pilot's licence for twelve years.
