Heat returns after cool start to September in Ontario

Friday, September 2, 2016, 7:14 PM - September 1st marks the first day of meteorological fall and as the Labour Day long weekend approaches, widespread single digit temperatures could signal an early start to the new season.

Sunnier skies can be expected Saturday across the region, although a strengthening tropical system could increase the chance for some cloud cover. 

Tropical Storm Hermine, which downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane early Friday morning, is expected to be upgraded to hurricane status by Monday as it tracks up the U.S. Eastern Seaboard toward New York.

"While no significant impact from Hermine is expected in Ontario, there's a chance of seeing some cloud cover for the second part of the weekend in southern parts of the province," Sonnenburg says.

Forecasters are closely watching Hermine as the storm tracks northeast near the East Coast of the U.S. and then meanders in the Atlantic south of the Maritimes.

"Again, Hermine is not expected to have a significant impact on the region, but this still bears watching as confidence remains low in the long range track for this storm," adds Dr. Doug Gillham, another meteorologist at The Weather Network.

It's hard enough to believe that the start of September here, but these much fresher temperatures as a result of a passing cold front are sure to remind you.

There was more than a 10 degree temperature contrast from northeastern Ontario and southern Ontario Wednesday as southern regions basked in another 30+ degree day. By Thursday however, much of the province will start to see a steady decline in temperatures.Parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec will see some of the summer's coolest temperatures on Thursday to Friday, with highs in the teens possible.

On Friday, parts of southern Ontario will see temperatures struggle to get warmer than 20^oC or so.

"Widespread single digit low temperatures are also expected across Cottage Country on Saturday," says Gillham. 

If you're a fan of the heat, not to worry, signs of summer will make a comeback by the end of the long weekend as temperatures near the 30 degree mark once again in the Greater Toronto Area.

"The back to school week also looks very warm and even hot for parts of southern Ontario the with the potential to top 30 C for a couple of days," Gillham says. "It's also looking to be a very dry long range forecast from southern Ontario the the Maritimes."
