A powerful system that brought treacherous road conditions to Ontario and flight cancellations in Quebec continued to plow east, impacting much of Atlantic Canada on Thursday.

Heavy snow, flooding rains and powerful winds hit the region, prompting school closures and several travel delays.

The heaviest snow was reported in parts of northern New Brunswick, where up to 45 cm piled up. Places like Moncton and St. Leonard also picked up close to 30 cm.

Blizzard conditions with near zero visibility were reported, resulting in dangerous driving conditions throughout the day.

"Visibilty isn't great on the highways in NB," tweeted The Weather Network's Nathan Coleman who was in the thick of the storm in Moncton Thursday.

A section of the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick was shut down on Thursday as the winter storm moved through. A major accident involving four transport trucks and two cars were involved, but officials say no life-threatening injuries were reported.

The highway re-opened at around 9 pm Thursday night.

Schools across the province also re-opened on Friday, but many school buses warned of possible delays.

A rain/snow mix hit parts of Newfoundland and the risk of some residual snow flurries continues Friday.

"The system is departing Newfoundland this morning, leaving a risk of sea effect snow showers in its wake on the west side of Newfoundland," says Weather Network meteorologist Monica Vaswani. "Cool temperatures are also forecast today throughout Atlantic Canada with another system set to move in tonight bringing a messy mix to New Brunswick and rain to Nova Scotia for Saturday."

According to Vaswani, this next system will also bring blustery winds to Newfoundland on Sunday with the risk of significant accumulating snow.
