Avalanche briefly traps six ice climbers west of Calgary

A morning mountain climb took a dangerous turn for a team of ice climbers west of Calgary Saturday morning. 

Six climbers were caught in an avalanche in the Rocky Mountains ironically as they were discussing whether or not to continue due to deteriorating conditions. 

In an interview with The Canadian Press, a public safety specialist with Kananaskis Country said one climber was buried to his chest in snow, while another was left with just her foot sticking out.

Meanwhile, the remaining four climbers were able to dig themselves out after about 90 seconds. 

Officials confirm that no one had suffered any serious injuries. 

A moisture-laden Pacific low is forecast to affect the area throughout the weekend. Winter sport enthusiasts are advise to use caution on the slopes. 

"Up to 30 cm of recent snow in Alpine terrain with light to moderate northerly winds is making avalanche conditions touchy in Alpine areas," writes the Canadian Avalanche Centre on their website. "Most areas at treeline and below are still below threshold for avalanches to occur."
