Mandarin oranges in short supply this Christmas

Friday, December 22, 2017, 6:50 PM - Mandarin oranges are a holiday tradition for many Canadian families -- but bad weather means the fruit are in short supply this year.

The mandarins that many Canadians have grown to love are imported from Japan, Morocco, Spain and China. Extreme weather, among other things, has led to shortages in all four countries.

Mandarins need warm temperatures to develop their sweet taste, followed by cooler temperatures to turn bright orange.

That didn't pan out this year, with many mandarins appearing discoloured.

Mandarin production is still happening in California, but some consumers find they don't taste the same, the CBC reports.

On the bright side, experts are predicting a better growing season in the coming months, meaning there will be lots of mandarins around in time for the holidays next year.
