STORMWATCH: Another weekend of winter for B.C.

Talk about deja vu.

For the second weekend in a row, British Columbia will get hit by two winter storms.

The first of them moves into the area today and could bring some messy weather. Wet snow is a possibility in lower elevation areas like Vancouver, while higher elevations will see snow.

On Sunday, temperatures will warm up throughout the day at some point. Higher elevations could still see some snow at that point.

"The snow will start late today and into the overnight will be mostly light but still several centimeters and then the snow will increase in intensity during the day in Sunday," said Doug Gillham, meteorologist at The Weather Network. "One of the keys is that there is going to be long range accumulation based on elevation and distance from the water. Areas in the lower mainland that were hardest hit last weekend will likely see a lot of snow this week."

Wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h are expected in different parts of the province, resulting in cold wind chill values of below -20 for inland sections of the Central and North Coasts. Temperatures will remain below seasonal during the weekend but warm up as we head into the week.

A snowfall warning was issued for Metro Vancouver as up to 25 centimeters of snow could be expected. There is also the risk of freezing rain on Sunday night into Monday morning over inland sections of the Fraser Valley.

"Snow should transition into rain Sunday night into Monday morning. That transition will occur coast and seal level first before working its way inland and up the elevation," Gillham said.

Weathering the storm in the name of hockey

The cold temperature won't be enough to stop some hockey fanatics as the Vancouver Canucks welcome the Ottawa Senators for the 2014 NHL Heritage Classic on Sunday at noon local time.

The game has been in the news quite a bit as Canucks struggled with an e-mail glitch that promised free tickets to all teams participating in their contest (which they were forced to take back and accommodate as many as possible), as well as the relatively slow movement of tickets which many attribute to lack of rivalry between the teams.

The "outdoor" game will be held in an indoor stadium with a retractable roof. The questions is now whether the roof will remain open as the game could come with an extra challenge because of the possibility of snow. The decision will be made closer to the start time.
