We're continually amazed by the depth of knowledge some members of our audience have about nature and the environment so today, we thought we'd put your skills to the test.  

Below, you'll find eight short video animations of leaves that belong to trees found in Canada. Study the image and the clues provided and see if you can guess the name of the tree.

TREE #1

We thought we'd start off with something easy.

Clue 1: This leaf makes an appearance on the Canadian flag.

Clue 2: It belongs to a tree that produces delicious syrup.

Clue 3: The 'fruit' this tree produces is a double-winged seed called a samara -- but most Canadian kids refer to it as a 'helicopter'.

Clue 1: The tree this leaf belongs to is native to North America.

Clue 2: It produces a nut that mentioned in a Christmas song by Nat King Cole.

Clue 3: This tree belongs to a large family: Estimates suggest there are more than 3 billion trees within this genus in North America.

TREE #3

Clue 1: This leaf is part of a tree that is one of the most common tree species in Pacific North America.

Clue 2: Oil distilled from the needles of this tree are used to used to treat coughs, the common cold, and fever, among other things.

Clue 3: This tree has many names, including: Baume du Canada and spruce fir.

TREE #4

Clue 1: These leaves belong to a tree that is native to eastern Canada.

Clue 2: It can grow up to 3 metres high.

Clue 3: The tree produces nuts that are a food staple to numerous woodland creatures, including: squirrels, deer, woodpeckers and turkeys.

TREE #5

Clue 1: When mature, this tree can grow up to 80 metres.

Clue 2: It produces seed cones that are barrel-shaped.

Clue 3: Its wood has been used to produce canoes, especially along B.C.'s Oakanagan.

TREE #6

Clue 1: These leaves belong to a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 10 metres high, typically with multiple trunks.

Clue 2: It grows at high elevations and has a good tolerance to the cold.

Clue 3: The bark of this tree is dark red-brown to a deep brown, almost black.

Clue 1: These leaves belong to a tree that is considered endangered in parts of Canada (an introduced, Asian species of the tree is thriving, though).

Clue 2: The leaves are dark green, toothed and feel rough.

Clue 3: Trees can grow up to 9 metres high.

Clue 1: This tree produces a fruit that some are calling a 'super berry'.

Clue 2: The tree is typically found on rocky, dry slopes.
