Dozens of dead geese dumped on Alberta family farm

Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 6:02 PM - Alberta wildlife officials are investigating after nearly 100 dead geese were killed and then dumped on an Alberta family's property.

Twyla Valgardson's husband Wayne made the discovery last week while driving through their property near Taber.

In a Facebook post, Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed 85 Canada geese and five snow geese were collected. Meat was taken from only 24 of the birds.

Valgardson told the CBC her family is "totally appalled".

"It's sad. It's disheartening to think of so much waste," she added.

Are Canada geese protected?

Canada geese are protected in Canada under the Migratory Birds and Convention Act, but they are considered a game bird.

This opens them up to being hunted during a specified hunting season, but only under strictly regulated conditions.

"It is an offence under the Wildlife Act to abandon the edible flesh of game species," Alberta Fish and Wildlife says in a Facebook post.

"Officers are asking the public for any information regarding this investigation to contact the Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800, or to report information online at https://www.alberta.ca/report-poacher.aspx."
