Saturday, March 14, 2015, 5:12 PM - At the time of his adoption less than two years ago, Dennis the brown dachshund weighed a staggering 56 pounds.

His diet consisted of pizza and white castle burgers, The Huffington Post reports. Before his adoption, Dennis belonged to a relative of nursing student Brooke Burton, who requested to adopt the dog after seeing his condition.

Today, Dennis weighs a healthy 12 pounds and consumes a dry-food diet. He walks regularly and has had surgery to help with his excess skin.

"In the beginning, you could tell he was very depressed, that he really didn't feel good at all," Burton told the Associated Press.

In an interview with WSYX, Burton stresses the importance of feeding dogs appropriate quantities and avoiding excess amounts of treats.

Kathleen Ham is the veterinary surgeon who conducted Dennis'excess skin operations. In an interview with the BBC, Ham says an important lesson is to be learned from Dennis.

"We have an expression: food is not love," Ham said to the BBC. "Most of what your pet wants from you is affection and attention."
