Eight amazing Canadian places you've got to see

Wednesday, May 6, 2015, 2:25 PM - From coast to coast, Canada is a beautiful country. While it would be impossible to put every interesting place Canada has to offer, here are eight places to consider adding to your travel bucket list.

8. ATLANTIC CANADA -- THE BAY OF FUNDY

A trip to the Maritimes isn't complete without a visit to the Bay of Fundy, which stretches between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

This area is home to the highest tides in the world, and visitors can see them rise twice a day, every day.

Standing between 12 and 20 metres high, the Hopewell rocks attract countless visitors each year, and are the result of years of erosion.

7. ATLANTIC CANADA -- NOVA SCOTIA'S CABOT TRAIL

Considered one of the world most scenic destinations, Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail is a stunning 298-kilometre roadway that's open year round.

There's plenty to discover along the way -- from incredible seafood to spectacular waterfalls to breathtaking trails.

The northern portion of the trail passes through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, while the western and eastern sections trail the coastline, providing an incredible view of the ocean.

You'll want to return here again and again.

6. QUEBEC - THE LAURENTIANS

Quebec's Laurentian mountain range is one of the oldest in the world, containing rocks that date back to the Cambrian Period, 540 million years ago. The area is home to several rivers and lakes, stunning scenery and famed skiing destination Mont Tremblant.

5. ONTARIO - THE CHELTENHAM BADLANDS

There are a lot of incredible places to see in Ontario -- from Algonquin Park, to wine country, to the Niagara Falls. But we picked the Cheltenham Badlands because of its alien landscape and because it remains relatively unknown -- even to some locals.

At first glance the region could be mistaken for something beamed back to Earth by the Mars Curiosity Rover -- but, in reality, the Cheltenham badlands are located about 45 minutes outside of Toronto.

This formation is the result of environmentally unfriendly farming practices that took places in the 1930s, causing the soil to erode and expose the shale rock underneath.

Iron oxide deposits are what give the land its reddish hue. Green streaks can be contributed to an interaction with ground water, turning the red iron oxide green.

This area was acquired by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 2000 and is currently managed by the Bruce Trail Association.

4. PRAIRIES -- BANFF, ALBERTA

In January 2014, USA Today named Alberta's Lake Louise Ski Resort as the most scenic in the world -- and it's not hard to see why.

With 4,200 acres available for skiing, it's one of the largest ski resorts in North America -- and it's definitely worth visiting, even if you aren't interested in hitting the slopes.

3. PRAIRIES -- ALBERTA BADLANDS

Alberta's Badlands are home to striking topography and a spectacular night sky.

Here you'll find Dinosaur National Park, a UNESCO World heritage site about two and a half hours southeast of Calgary, that is rich in dinosaur fossils. To date, forty dinosaurs species and more than 500 specimens have been recovered at the site.

And then there's the hoodoos -- incredible rock formations that took millions of years to form. Standing between 5 and 7 metres tall, the protected rock formations are fragile and can whittle away if their capstone falls off.

In the Blackfoot and Cree traditions, Hoodoos are thought to be petrified giants who come to life at night to throw rocks at unwanted visitors.

The Badlands is one-of-a-kind in its beauty, and it's a must-see when visiting the Prairies.

2. BRITISH COLUMBIA -- YOHO NATIONAL PARK

Located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in southeastern British Columbia, Yoho National Park covers 1,313 square kilometres of breathtaking landscape.

Part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site (along with Jasper, Kootenay and Banff National Parks), Yoho is home to rivers, mountains, waterfalls and stunning wildlife.

1. NWT -- YELLOWKNIFE

The skies over Yellowknife serve as a spectacular backdrop for the northern lights. It's considered one of the best locations in the world for viewing this natural light show, which attracts thousands of visitors a year.
