Elderly woman, husband die in extreme cold in Exeter, Ont.

Friday, January 5, 2018, 5:52 PM - An elderly woman who went outdoors in extreme cold to check on her husband died this week in Exeter, Ontario.
The body of her spouse, 90-year-old Grant Triebner, was found inside an open barn on their property. He died from a massive heart attack, according to an obituary posted on a funeral home website.

Police were called to check in on the well-being of the couple Wednesday morning. Foul play is not suspected. Officials believe 83-year-old Ada Triebner went outside to find her husband and died because of the extreme cold.

According to Environment Canada, more than 80 people die each year across the country from extreme cold. Officials recommend checking in on elderly neighbours and people living along when severe weather hits.
North America is expected to receive a break from the extreme cold weather gripping parts of the continent in the second half of the month.
"However, we are still roughly ten days away from seeing this pattern get established," writes Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham.
"The second week of January will be a week of transition which will bring a temperature roller coaster and active weather across much of Canada."
