Monday, February 23, 2015, 5:23 PM - Photos of a strange ice sculpture found in the parking lot of a North Carolina parking lot earlier this week have gone viral.

The strange ice formation appears to be the near-perfect impression of the front of a Jeep. Photos of it have been shared thousands of times on social media and have received coverage from several news outlets.

While it's not clear who 'created' the ice sculpture, the working theory is the owner of a Jeep left their vehicle running to warm up the engine, causing some of the ice on the car to melt. When the driver backed up, a layer of ice detached. It remained upright because part of it was attached to the curb.

Local news agency WITN says it was initially skeptical of the photo until it received two different images from viewers, showing the sculpture from different angles.

Other photos from different angles have popped up on social media as well.

The midwestern and northeastern U.S. are in the midst of a frigid winter, with record-breaking cold firmly in place across the region.
