An early-season fall-like storm has been bringing damaging northwesterly winds to the area with gusts reaching upwards of 80 km/h in some places.

"Strong north to northwesterly winds are forecast to spread from central to east across Newfoundland early this afternoon, with coastal gusts reaching 100 to 120 km/h," says Environment Canada in the warning. "Winds will begin to subside over parts of the south coast near noon, and in the east and northeast coasts by late this afternoon."

According to EC, winds this strong are considered to be fairly unusual for this time of year.

"Given the fact that most trees are carrying their full summer foliage, the public is advised to use caution near wooded areas due to the risk of falling branches or trees," EC warns. "Additionally, light campers, tents and patio furniture will be vulnerable to damage or being taken by the wind."

Rainfall warnings that were issued on Monday have since been dropped, but up to 60 mm could fall across the Northern Peninsula through the day Tuesday.

"Temperatures in Newfoundland will also take a hit into the remainder of the week with daytime highs only reaching the teens," says Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern.
