Fatal shark attack caught live on camera

Tuesday, February 10, 2015, 1:17 PM - A 41-year-old surfer died after being attacked by a shark, in an incident caught on camera by a coastal webcam service.

Coastalwatch says part of the attack was captured by its Surf Cam at Shelly Beach in Ballina in the state of New South Wales.

"The contact appears to last for approximately 5-10 seconds with a large amount of water, turbulence and splashing occurring," Coastalwatch said in a statement, adding the camera then panned away without capturing any other footage, and that the footage that was captured was not graphic.

The service then switched control of the camera to local lifeguard rescue officers, thus removing it from public view. Coastalwatch says it won't release the footage of the incident, and The Weather Network has not viewed it.

The Guardian reports the victim, Tadashi Nakahara, was pulled from the water by rescuers, but died of his injuries soon after.

An eyewitness told the newspaper Nakahara was seated on his board when the shark struck it hard enough to send him flying.

It's the second shark attack in as many days in Australia, after a 35-year-old man was attacked the day before Nakahara. He survived the attack with lacerations to his back and is recovering in hospital.
